Josh’s Frogs DART FROG BioBedding Bioactive Substrate (4 quart)

Highlights:

Josh’s Frogs Dart Frog BioBedding Bioactive Substrate is the perfect blend for growing tropical plants both in the home and in bioactive vivariums!

Our mix is a more eco-friendly modification on the original ABG Mix developed by Atlanta Botanical Gardens – it doesn’t contain tree fern! Each bag is a precise mixture of charcoal, milled sphagnum moss, fir bark, minerals and trace elements.

The mixture creates the perfect balance between retaining moisture and proper drainage; it can last for several years if used properly!

  • PLANTS THRIVE: Enables a huge variety of plants, especially tropicals and houseplants, to thrive
  • LONG LASTING: Specifically designed to break down slowly, making it prime for use in terrariums/vivariums
  • BIO-BALANCED: Each of the multiple ingredients in this precise mix support a balanced ecosystem
  • EXCELLENT FOR CULTURING: Great for springtails, isopods, and other similar insects

How to Prep: Mix contents thoroughly before adding the BioBedding to the terrarium. Also, wet the substrate with distilled or reverse osmosis water before using it for cleaner moving—the moisture helps cut down on dust.

Recommended Animals:

  • Dart Frogs
  • Most Tree Frogs
  • Mantellas
  • Invertebrates

Josh’s Frogs DESERT BioBedding Bioactive Substrate (4 quarts)

Highlights:

Desert BioBedding is the perfect substrate for your desert or arid bioactive encolsure. It’s ideal for leopard geckos, fat tail geckos, bearded dragons, many monitor species, and many other herps and inverts. This substrate is a unique blend of ingredients designed to jump-start the bioactive environment. It helps to maintain a low level of humidity, yet retains moisture in a way to easily provide humid hides and support a community of cleaner invertebrates and beneficial organisms.

  • Tank stays cleaner due to bioactive cycle
  • Less substrate changes, which is less stressful on your pet
  • Closer to replicating your pet’s natural habitat
  • More attractive than traditional substrates

How to Prep:

For semi-arid species, such as leopard or fat tail geckos, place 1 inch of Desert BioBedding on the floor if your enclosure. Add a small amount of dechlorinated or R/O water until the bottom inch of the substrate sticks together when squeezed, but no water runs out. Then, add another 2-3 inches of dry Desert BioBedding on top. More can be used to facilitate digging in burrowing species. This substrate does not require a drainage layer. Instead, add water underneath a humid hide every 1-2 months, as needed, to keep the bottom layer moist. Over time, the top layer will develop a crust due to the mist/dry cycle. Mist very lightly every day, ensuring to mist the substrate under the hide directly.

For full sand/high desert species, apply a 1-2 inch layer of Desert BioBedding to the bottom of your enclosure. Add water so that the substrate sticks together when squeezed, but does not leak water. Create 4 inch tall mounds with the damp substrate where humid hides and plants will be, then fill the space between with sand.

Do not place a heating pad on the bottom of the tank with this substrate.

4 quart bag measures ~9″L x 2″W x 13″H

Recommended Animals:

  • Bearded dragons
  • Leopard geckos
  • Fat-Tail geckos
  • Semi-Arid Monitor

Suitable for Misted Setups: Yes- make sure to mist lightly in the evening. This will result in the top of the substrate developing a mild ‘crust’, much like in nature. Mist the base of any plants and humid hides directly. Substrate under humid hides and the bottom 1 inch of the enclosure substrate should remain moist.

Care: Desert BioBedding is a naturalistic vivarium substrate and is meant to house a bioactive clean up crew! Stir the surface of Desert BioBedding every 1-2 weeks with a fork, or if waste is visible. Burying waste allows microfauna to process it quicker. Change the substrate when it begins to break down – typically after several years. Please note that Desert BioBedding is designed to grow fungi – this is not a sign of a dirty tank, but of a healthy, clean bioactive environment.

Josh’s Frogs False Bottom – LECA (5 Quarts)

Highlights:
False bottom (also known as LECA, for light expanded clay aggregate) is a great choice for the drainage layer in a vivarium. LECA is a natural product, made from heated clay. It retains moisture, provides lots of surface area for bacteria and plant roots to grow, and wicks water, which will help maintain humidity in a vivarium.
* This product can range in color from burnt orange to dark brown, almost black. *
How to Use: Rinse with dechlorinated tap water before use. Place a 2-3 inch layer as the drainage layer in a vivarium. Designed to be used with our substrate barrier and ABG to provide ideal vivarium conditions for tropical plants and dart frogs.
Warnings/Caution: Rinse before use. May contain dust.

Josh’s Frogs ProHatch Incubation Media (1 lb)

Highlights:

Hatch reptile eggs like a professional with ProHatch from Josh’s Frogs! Designed by breeders for breeders, ProHatch is a highly absorbent hatching media engineered specifically to retain excess moisture, then slowly release it throughout the incubation process. This drastically reduces the need to add water, results in a more consistent humidity level, and greatly reduces the chance of moldy or collapsed eggs. Incubate reptile eggs like a pro with ProHatch!

Recommended Animals:

  • Lizards
  • Snakes

Care: After your eggs have hatched, the ProHatch should be disposed of. Never reuse ProHatch, as contaminants from hatched eggs can lead to fungus and mold growth.

Josh’s Frogs Substrate Barrier (24×18 inch)

Highlights:

Josh’s Frogs Substrate Barrier is a vital layer in all successful naturalistic vivaria. Substrate Barrier fits between the false bottom and ABG Mix layers, and ensures that no ABG Mix falls down into the false bottom, disrupting water flow.

Josh’s Frogs Substrate Barrier also prevents a clogged false bottom and the wicking of water from the false bottom into the other naturalistic vivarium substrate layers. When these substrate layers become saturated, anaerobic bacteria grow, which create a smelly, very unhealthy environment. The only solution is to replace the affected naturalistic vivarium substrates with new ones. Josh’s Frogs Substrate Barrier is simple, inexpensive, and effective way to prevent this situation from happening.

Each peice of Josh’s Frogs Substrate Barrier measures approximately 18 x 24 inches.

Josh’s Frogs Vermiculite (1 quart)

Highlights:

Vermiculite is widely used in the horticulture industry as a soil amendment and when mixed with the soil, it provides better drainage and aeration. It is also used as a permanent soil conditioner and lasts much longer than other common soil conditioners.

Josh’s Frogs Vermiculite (10 quarts)

Highlights:

Josh’s Frogs Vermiculite is an old standby of experienced reptile breeders. Vermiculite is considered by many to be the ultimate incubation media for many species of reptiles. Easy to use and inexpensive, Josh’s Frogs vermiculite allows you to properly incubate and hatch healthy, robust offspring.

  • ULTIMATE INCUBATION MEDIA for snakes, lizards, tortoises, turtles and more! Perfect for professionals and beginners alike.
  • DISCOURAGES FUNGAL GROWTH and supports a clean and sterile environment for the eggs
  • RETAINS WATER and slowly releases it throughout incubation so that the eggs have the moisture they need to hatch
  • LIVE PLANTS also love it in potting mixes as a natural conditioner, which helps the soil stay moist, yet light, so the roots aren’t smothered

Recommended Animals:

  • Geckos
  • Lizards
  • Tortoises
  • Turtles
  • Iguanas
  • Snakes

Care: Add clean, distilled or Reverse Osmosis water to the Vermiculite at a 1:1 ratio, but only make as much as you are going to use. Vermiculite does not store well damp.

Check for recommendations with the specific animal you’re working with. Never reuse Vermiculite.

Vermiculite is not recommended as a sole substrate for growing mushrooms, as it has a neutral pH and mushrooms need a more acidic pH.
